Fim Season: the Spanish Civil War, a Conflict that Stirred the World, BFI, Belvedere Road, South Bank, London
The programme represents more than seven decades of cinema offering different views of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and its consequences. The very first film in this survey having been made in 1936 and the most recent dating from 2008, this programme offers documentaries and films that look directy at the war itself, as well as films that use the period as a backdrop to other stories. These have been produced in film cultures as diverse as Hollywood, the USSR, Spain, France, the UK and East Germany. The programme also includes a selection of News and Documentaries - cinema propaganda newsreels that Franco used from 1939 until 1981.

Viva!: 15th Spanish And Latin American Film Festival, Riverside Studios, Crisp Road, Hammersmith, London
Now in its 15th year, the Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival celebrates the best of the current crop of Spanish language films. Three of them are screened in London at Riverside Studios: two new Spanish features 'Second Round' and 'Heart of Time' and the documentary 'Night Flowers'.

The first major UK presentation of the works of Argentine Grupo de Artistas de Vangardia will take place in Pump House Gallery. The group, formed in the 1960s, created some of the most important examples of political and investigative art in Latin America. This exhibition, co-produced with Graciela Carnevale, a member and participant in the group’s projects, brings together an archive of photographs, manifestos, reports and documentation of their activities.

meetings in the UK in June as well as attending the Cuba50 Weekend

Music: Pablo Milanes + Harold Lopez Nussa + Son Tropical, Barbican Centre, Silk Street, London, . Singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés remains one of the undisputed giants of Cuban music. A major figure in the 1960s nueva trova song movement, he was strongly identified with the progressive aspirations of the government of Fidel Castro. Milanés gained renown for his highly poetic lyrics and gentle but emotional singing, and is now one of the most popular and respected Cuban musicians and songwriters alive.

Featuring a fearsome collection of virtuoso musicians, their live shows are all about the relationship between the band and the dance-floor, with call-and-response Afro-Cuban conga, sharp horns and violin riffs, vocal improvisations drifting in and out between this solid groove. A dance groove that has made generations of people dance to their unmistakable dance beat. If George Clinton was Cuban then Los Van Van would be his band.
